Mt. Baker has had many names over the centuries. Before the arrival of Europeans, the speakers of the four Salishan languages nearest the mountain each had a different name for it including Koma Kulshan or Kulshan (Lummi: qwú’me, “white sentinel”, and kwelshé:n, “puncture wound”, i.e. “crater”)..
